Description

Appearance Colorless crystalls
Density 2,109 g/cm3
Molar mass 101,11 g/mol
Hygroscopicity Hygroscopic point at room temperature 91,7%
Transition heat 5,04 kJ/mol
Melting point 334 oC (very slow decomposition). At 560oC it splits off oxygen at a noticeable rate and turns into potassium nitrite:

2KNO3 → 2KNO2 + O2.

Heat of formation -495,0 kJ/mol
Melting heat 96,9 kJ/kg
Heat capacity At 300K 950 J/(kg*K)
Heat conductivity 0,72 W/(m*K)
Toxicity Average level of toxicity. In real conditions, poisoning is possible only if accidentally swallowed in quantities of several grams.

Solubility

Almost insoluble in organic solvents.

Decomposition

At temperatures from 800 up to 900oC, nitrite decomposes with the release of nitrogen oxides and reacts to form potassium oxide:

2KNO2 → K2O + NO2 + NO.

Heating

When heated above 128.8 ° C, it changes from rhombic to hexagonal system.

During storage, it gradually shrinks.

In industry, potassium nitrate is made by pouring solutions of sodium nitrate and potassium chloride. The solution is evaporated until the maximum decomposition of sodium chloride is precipitated. The precipitate is filtered off while hot, and then the solution is cooled – potassium nitrate precipitates. After several recrystallizations a pure product is obtained.

Compositions based on potassium nitrate have a relatively low ignition temperature, reduced hygroscopicity and low sensitivity to mechanical stress.

Valuable combined fertilizer contains of nitrogen and potassium.

Usage

  • Potassium nitrate uses in electrovacuum industry and optical glass melting for discoloration and lightening of technical crystal glasses. It gives strength to glass products.
  • As a strong oxidizing agent in metallurgy. Processing of nickel ores.
  • In the food industry.

Potassium nitrate is used as a preservative E252. It does not have a significant antibacterial effect by itself, but it can be occurred as a result of the reduction of potassium nitrite in meat products, in which potassium nitrate is most widely used as a preservative.

Application of potassium nitrate in pyrotechnics

Potassium nitrate has been used as an oxidizing agent since ancient times.

In black powder manufacture, as well as in pyrotechnic compositions (mainly in igniters, incendiaries, signal and fireworks).

Potassium nitrate is used as part of Fire Extinguishing Aerosol Generators.
